CFP: Many Faces of War V, and WAWIC 2025

Two conferences on ancient warfare will be held in the northern part of the United States next spring or summer.

Jeffrey Rop and Lennart Gilhaus are organizing the next War in the Ancient World International Conference as a dual online-offline event in Duluth MN and Münster DE.

We invite submissions on any aspect, era, or geographical region of ancient warfare, encouraging a broad and inclusive discussion. Contributions from archaeological, philological, and historical perspectives are welcome, with particular interest in topics related to the Greco-Roman world, the ancient Near East, ancient Egypt, and neighboring cultures. The conference is open to doctoral students, early-career researchers, and established scholars alike.

We welcome proposals for both individual papers as well as for entire thematic panels. Thematic panels can be accommodated at either location. We particularly welcome transcontinental panels and will facilitate their connection through Zoom.

For individual contributions, please send an abstract of 300 words and a brief bio to Jeffrey Rop (jarop@d.umn.edu) for North America and Lennart Gilhaus (lgilhaus@uni-bonn.de) for Europe BEFORE January 15th 2025.

The conference itself will take place from 29.05.2025 to 31.05.2025

Four panels have already been proposed:

  • War in the Steppe: Characteristics and Modalities of the Conflict in Palmyra and
  • On Desertion: social aspects and representations of non-participation in ancient Greek and Roman warfare
  • The Iconography of War in Antiquity
  • Visualizing Victory: Propaganda around Military Victories in Antiquity

Graham Wrightson will be holding another Many Faces of War conference in Brookings, SD in February or March 2025.

  • Downtown Library, Sioux Falls, SD (online contributions possible)
  • Call for Papers due 15 January
  • February or March 2025 (exact dates TBD but I’m thinking 6-7 to give time between the SMH meeting in Mobile, AL March 27-30 – if you all have a preference let me know!)
  • Theme: The Consequences of Conquest “For the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II we will examine what happens after a defeat or a victory in a war, a conflict, or a battle. Throughout history many themes of change and adaptability emerge whether involving civilians, veterans, or physical locations.”

My wise readers don’t need to be reminded of considerations when deciding whether to travel to a face-to-face conference in another country or region these days. We all need our own green book when we decide whether to go to indoor events and other jurisdictions. I can’t make that choice for anyone else but some helpful links are:

But its very important to connect face to face with people with shared interests and goals. I do not know whether I will present at either online or in person, the future is uncertain.
