Cross-Post: Deeds of Arms Series
Until Monday 2 October, the Deeds of Arms series from Freelance Academy Press in Ilinois is on sale for 30% off (about USD 19 per volume). This is a collection of translations of sources about formal combats in front of an audience in western Europe in the fourteenth and fifteenth century. In an earlier life I knew the authors Steve Muhlberger and Will McLean and both are (or were) clear, entertaining writers and careful historians. For a variety of reasons their books did not sell as well as had been hoped. If you are in the USA, or can afford the shipping outside the USA, and you like reading about duels and jousts and trials by combat, they would be worth a read.
- Deeds of Arms, Vol. 1: Royal Jousts
- Deeds of Arms, Vol. 2: The Combat of the Thirty
- Deeds of Arms, Vol. 3: The Twelve of England
- Deeds of Arms, Vol. 4: Will a Frenchman Fight?
- Deeds of Arms, Vol. 5: Murder, Rape, and Treason: Judicial Combats in the Later Middle Ages
